Companies like Amazon make smart speakers. Apple does too. But Amazon also makes smart displays, which are essentially just speakers with a touchscreen display on them. Now it looks like Apple could follow suit with a smart display of their own.
According to a report from MacRumors, they have discovered code in Apple’s backend that hints that a smart display could be in the works. They discovered a device with the “HomeAccessory17,1” identifier which suggests a new product category. Prior to this, Apple’s HomePods had the “AudioAccessory” identifier.
It also seems to be in line with rumors from earlier this year that suggests that Apple could be working on a new platform designed for smart home devices. It is unclear what this device could be, but some are speculating that it could be a smart display. It could also potentially leverage Apple Intelligence.
We’re not sure why Apple would create a smart display. Its HomePod smart speakers weren’t exactly selling like hotcakes, so to move onto a potentially more expensive product seems a little strange. Either way, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt. Hopefully Apple will have more details to share come September when their new iPhones are announced.
