While Google’s Pixel smartphones are often lauded for their camera performance, there are times when computational photography and software processing aren’t quite enough to deliver desired results. This has lead to some to criticize Google’s decisions with regards to the camera hardware inside its smartphones, although this might change soon with the Pixel 9.
Recent leaks predict that Google will use new hardware for the Pixel 9 series – as reported by the folks from Android Authority, a source within Google claims that the Pixel 9 series phones will come with some changes to camera specifications.
For one, Google is replacing the old Sony IMX386 ultrawide sensor with a brand-new Sony IMX858 sensor in the base model Pixel 9, which allows for better low-light performance. Another new change includes a newer selfie camera with autofocus, a feature that was previously reserved for the Pro Pixel models. As for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, it’s expected that Google will retain the same camera configurations as before.
Just recently, a French website listed the expected European prices for the Pixel 9 series, hinting at a significant increase. Compared to the Pixel 8, the Pixel 9 ‘s prices are up from €100 to €140 for the 128GB and 256GB models, respectively. Likewise, the 256GB and 512GB Pixel 9 Pro models see a slight price increase at around €40 versus the Pixel 8 Pro from last year.
