It’s spooky season again, and if you’re in the mood to just kick back and immerse yourself in some gaming on your Android phone, then we’ve put together this list of terror-rific (sorry, we couldn’t resist) games that you’ll want to check out, just in time for Halloween. This list spans different genres and styles of gameplay, so there’s hopefully something for everyone – let’s get started!
Dead Trigger
Let’s start with one of the classics – Dead Trigger has been on the Play Store for around a decade now, and for good reason. Originally published by Mad Finger games (and now under Deca Games), Dead Trigger is a free first-person shooter (FPS) game where you take on hordes of zombies. It’s fairly lightweight, and the visuals are decent even for 2024. The game also has tons of missions and unlockable items, although there’s also an option to pay for special power-ups.
Into the Dead Series
Another action FPS, Into the Dead also has you fighting off zombies, although it’s a bit faster in terms of gameplay and pacing. In addition to FPS action, it also integrates elements seen in endless runner games, where players must go for as long as they can without getting devoured by the undead. There are also options to spend money in-game for additional items and power-ups. There’s also a sequel which comes with a bit more content, which should make for more zombie-slaying goodness.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Up next we have what is arguably one of the best gaming classics available on the Play Store, Konami’s Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. First launched on the OG PlayStation, SOTN combines role-playing elements and lengthy meaty in-game exploration and platforming, giving players a ton of playtime to sink their fangs into. It also supports both touch controls and external controllers, so you can easily pair a wireless controller to your smartphone for all the action.
Telltale’s The Walking Dead
Telltale’s Walking Dead adaptation has earned its reputation as one of the best spin-offs of the Walking Dead franchise, and players who want to try a game that’s more into story-telling and an overall haunting and dramatic atmosphere will definitely want to check out this one. Cut down into a lengthy episodic format, TWD follows Lee and Clementine as they make their way through a world infested by flesh-eating zombies, and players will have to tap into their decision-making skills to make it through the game.
Grimvalor
A personal favourite, Grimvalor is an award-winning game from Direlight Studios that puts you – a warrior equipped with axes, swords and magical items – against hordes of brooding monsters and bosses of increasing difficulty. Grimvalor takes exploration and progression elements from popular franchises like Castlevania, and combines them with slick combat controls, great-looking graphics, and voice-acting. It works with both touchscreen and physical controls.
