Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Named Official Mobile Handset of Major League Gaming, Havok Tools Made Available to Developers

Rewind one year and Sony news coming out of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) might not have had much interest to Android enthusiasts like us, but this is 2011: the year of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Whether or not the handset redefines mobile gaming remains to be seen, but SE announced two key partnerships that hope to help their new handset do the job.

First comes a team-up on the promotional front. Major League Gaming has partnered with Sony Ericsson to crown the Xperia Play as the official handset of MLG. Not only will this take the Play front and center for a community of nearly 8 million gamers, but it should also bring us some competitive fun with the new Xperia handset as the focus.

Then, in a more utilitarian sense, SE announced a partnership with Havok to provide Android game developers with the necessary tools to create new content for the Xperia Play and Android platform. Havok is a cross-platform set of technologies that can be seen in many of today’s most popular games for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. Bringing these technologies to mobile should only serve to strengthen the quality of games available. Here is a video of the Havok engine in action:

So what say ye? Will one of our very own readers rise up to be an MLG champ on the Xperia Play?

  1. Havoc is a nice addon for gaming future on android. I hope Sony wont be restrictive for exclusivity of Havoc games for their device only

  2. I hope the play will be just the phone I need! If so I’ll be giving my girly the ipod touch 4g! I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

  3. well, if games depend on physical controls and nobody else is smart enough to come up with a similar phone, yeah those games will be exclusive to Play.

  4. Ya it looks like it could be an awesome phone but I’m not paying what their asking… probably still going to be steep even on contract
