If Sprint’s public and formal disapproval of AT&T’s proposed purchasing of T-Mobile for $39 billion wasn’t enough, New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman is looking to investigate the matter himself. He states his efforts will be to ensure that the New Yorkers he represents aren’t hit with unfair mobile price hikes due to the deal.
He’s said to scrutinize AT&T and T-Mobile’s reasonings behind the move. AT&T is confident that they can prove to the FCC and to any other unsure souls like Schneiderman that the deal would be better for everyone involved, consumers included.
An official buyout might not be approved for at least another year as the FCC needs to carefully review every detail and determine whether or not the move is healthy for the ecosystem. If an approval is made it might not affect consumers until at least another year after that. [via Reuters]
That’s right not only is sprint STANDING STRONG in this matter but now the ATTORNEY GENERAL WILL STAND STRONG ON THIS MATTER…Ass t&t should just GIVE UP…This will not HAPPEN
sprint is just scared notice how verizon doesnt say anything about this? Sprint knows if this went through they stand no chance since they are barely hanging on as it is and this would make them the smallest carrier with least amount of coverage
Another Leech looking for blood.
wasn’t AT&T broken up just a few years ago for… being uncompetitive?
And so it begins…lol
Every T-Mobile and Sprint user wants T-Mobile to come with sprint lol its a good look for both companies if they do to be honest the lower companies combining to take the #1 spot
HTC EVO
i hope many people take this to the streets and protest
While I don’t like the merge, this is a business matter not a government matter and the government should stay out of it. While I do agree that prices will eventually be affected a year or two down the road once the merge is complete, it’s up to the people to demand action, NOT the government. We’ve got the government in too many aspects of our lives already. The only way this issue can be resolved is for people to voice their opinions with their wallets. Take your business elsewhere if you’re on AT&T or Tmobile and FORCE AT&T to make changes. The problem is, AT&T has been robbing it’s customers for years but your average consumer is an idiot and don’t pay attention to these things. All you need to do is a Google search to see how many lawsuits AT&T has been in over the last decade, from everything to overcharging customers for txt messages, to over billing and inflating customer minutes. (and everything in between) Yet AT&T still has the nations largest customer base.
I think it’s “ok” for the government to get involved, but you’re definitely right on the money…people should get involved and stand up when the day comes — just leave AT&T/T-Mobile…
Verizon is really expensive though… :(
verizon is cheaper than at&t has better service and unlimited data. Yeah tmobile is cheaper but with half as much coverage. I would rather pay a little more and know I will be covered rather then save some money and get stuck not having coverage
“AT&T is confident that they can prove to the FCC and to any other unsure souls like Schneiderman that the deal would be better for everyone involved”
– Yeah they will pay everyone off, nothing like a little greasing of the wheels to get the car rolling!! The only way AT&T gets anything is by buying it and then selling it for a lot more to the consumer… I for one will drop my cell service the day that AT&T is the only carrier which could be sooner than we think!
@eclipse, I agree with you. This is a business matter. I understand that the government is to protect us from a monopoly however there is still viable competition with at&t. It will force verizon and sprint to step up their game to keep up. I am currently with tmobile, however of the merger goes through then I will move to either sprint or verizon. Many people will make the same move. On top of that att will probably gain control over a fraction of tmobile, like how verizon bought alltel and had to sell a certain amount of the tall estate. In the end, if the deal goes through I see att getting only a few more customers, most will flee to sprint, verizon, or a local mobile provider.
A tmo sprint merger sounds more better. If the Att tmo buyout did more good than harm then im all for it. So far its not even clear as to how it will play a role in the future of mobile providers.
As a vzw customer I would love to see sprint tmobile merge, I don’t think it would it be that hard too create a cdma(evdo)/gsm (hspa+) phone. Convert wimax to lte and start pushing vo lte and gsm/cdma phone of course I could be crazy
