That was just a tad bit sooner than we expected, but who’s complaining? The folks at Sprint have just informed everyone that the HTC EVO 4G will be getting its official Gingerbread upgrade tomorrow, June 3rd. The update won’t be pushed to your phone at this time – you’ll have to ping Google’s servers for the goods. Those who’d rather wait for Sprint to notify them can wait until Monday, June 6th, but there really is no point unless you don’t want to be a guinea pig to any potential issues. HTC EVO™ 4G from Sprint will receive the Android™ 2.3, Gingerbread, update through an over-the-air maintenance release beginning on Monday, June 6.
Sprint will send update notifications to users in waves. The notification will let users know the update is available and provide the simple two-step, over-the-air download instructions.
- Users will receive a notification that Android 2.3 is available for download.
- Once the user has downloaded the update, they will be prompted to install the update. The user will be notified that their device will be disabled during the installation process. The phone will be ready to use once the process completes.
Can’t Wait Until June 6?
For those who just can’t wait to get Android 2.3, there will be an easy user initiated option to download the upgrade starting on Friday, June 3. To access the update – from the home screen/Menu/Settings/System updates/HTC software Update. This will initiate the upgrade process.
The software release upgrades HTC EVO 4G to Android 2.3, Gingerbread. This version of Android improves download management through the Downloads application, offering the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email or another application. It also fixes the devices ability to stream media through certain applications for the device.
Gingerbread restores HTC EVO 4G’s ability to sync multiple Gmail™ accounts, display email attachments in the email client and fixes battery discharge issues.

Does anyone know what version of Gingerbread this update has? 2.3.3? 2.3.4? Basically I want to know if I’m going to be able to get my Google Talk video chat on…
I think it’s safe to assume it’ll be the 2.3.4 version w/ video chat on gtalk.

Would I still get the over the update even if I am rooted?
If you do don’t accept the upgrade, it could really mess things up. The xda devs will have it rooted in no time then just install one of their ROMs.
Last time I accepted the update on my rooted LG optimus it ruined the root. I have a rooted Evo running MIUI so I wont accept the update until xda has a solution to it.

The granddaddy of all 4g devices is getting alittle love It’s well deserved. Sprint will rule for the remainder of the summer with announcement after announcement.

Still waiting on Sprint to “rule” the 4G area… No new cities since December? Yeah, I’m definitely feeling how we’re “ruling” all other carriers.
They`ll announce new city this month and the next one too, I heard they`ll get 4G to Detroit area sometime this month.
It’s slowly spreading through San Diego. In the last couple of weeks, 4 new towers have been turned on around downtown SD. They may not be announcing any new cities, but they are still doing something, at least.
While I acknowledge that they are expanding areas that already have 4G, as I said “no NEW cities”. All the while Verizon and *I think* AT&T or T-Mobile are bringing their 4G to completely new markets at an (arguably) impressive rate. Granted, as you basically stated, something is better than nothing. But you can’t claim to be the “ruler” (as Richard did) while having a somewhat floundering 4G network and generally be in 3rd place in terms of subscribers.

I’d cheer that I’m finally getting the GB update …. but then I realized I’ve been using it sense January anyway (Thanks dev community).
Moral of the story: If you have an EVO and it’s not rooted, you’re doing it wrong.
So true its great that fellow Evo owners will finally get the GB update but I had that for a month and a half ago, if you truly want to have “Android” experience I suggest the best thing is to root and add/remove what you want on ya device

I just messed around with the HTC tablet yesterday. I was kinda jealous it had GB. NOT anymore. I have Swype installed on my EVO from the last update. I haven’t seen it in the market. Will this update remove swype? Hope not.
You can back the APK up to your computer. I always back up all my apps with Astro. That way I can always reinstall it.
Had my original Galaxy S (which came out 6 months before Evo4G) on official Gingerbread months ago. A bit late aren’t we HTC?

Its Android 2.3.3 and I don’t see much difference other than the clock widget flips down as it changes. I don’t see the ability to use video chat in google talk.
Are there any cosmetic changes that come with Gingerbread?
