Today Sprint unveiled their first international Android, the Motorola Photon 4G. The Photon 4G is more or less a 4G WiMAX variant of AT&T’s Motorola Atrix 4G with a few key changes. Aside from world-roaming capabilities, the Photon gets a sized-up qHD display at 4.3-inches and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the most notable difference between the two. Otherwise, this handset reads as a solid translation of the already strong Atrix design with its dual-core Tegra 2 chipset and implementation of MotoBlur. Did we mention Moto threw in a kickstand?
While I hate to keep comparing the two handsets, the Photon also receives the same Webtop support as the Atrix. The only accessory shown for the Photon was the HD docking station, though we’re sure a lapdock will be announced by launch. Speaking of launch, no solid release date was named for the new handset, but the broad time table of Summer was given. We really like the tweaks Motorola and Sprint have made to the design. What results isn’t a totally original handset, but it’s an extremely strong offering for a Sprint handset lineup already burgeoning with top-notch handsets.
